How migraine can be adequately treated while avoiding development of medication overuse headache

At EAN 2022, Gisela Terwindt, Professor of Neurology, Leiden University Medical Centre, Leiden, The Netherlands, introduced herself and discussed how telemedicine is a part of the new era of personalized healthcare that can help patients with migraine. The Leiden Headache Centre, of which she is Director, has developed an e-tool in the form of a daily headache diary. This is used by patients to log if a headache is present, the symptoms they are experiencing, what medication they took, and how the migraine impacted their life that day. Healthcare professionals at the Leiden Headache Centre can access this data and advise patients if their medication use pattern and/or prescription needs adjusting so as to prevent both migraines and medication overuse headache, which can occur if the patient takes too much of some acute headache treatments.
