Important considerations when educating patients about medication overuse headache

At EAN 2022, Henrik Schytz, Associate Professor of Neurology, Denmark Headache Center, Denmark, discussed how some patients feel guilty when they have medication overuse headache and they need to be educated that this is something that has a biological basis of development. For instance, descending inhibition signals may be affected by medication overuse. The goal of precipitating medication withdrawal is to restore brain pathways affected in these cases.
